Cat owners have the opportunity to proudly show off their special animal - while trying to save other cats.
Marley Fund, a nonprofit organization with headquarters outside of Greenville, which educates people about feline retroviruses, collect photos for its 11th annual cat calendar called Marley Next Top Cat.
Calendar 2012 features 12 extraordinary cats as well as useful information about feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which is very similar to HIV in cats.
Joy Eubanks, Marley Fund founder and CEO, said, FeLV and FIV, is the number one killer of domestic cats. He said the disease is particularly problematic in the state.
"North Carolina ranks third in the country of the impact (of feline retroviruses)," said Eubanks, a native Kinston. "We believe that people from the South to keep them outside, and is transmitted by contact with cats. It's like Parvo in dogs, it is very contagious."
He continued: "Marley was my cat, and if I had known all this, I could have avoided (his death)."
The registration fee of $ 15 is required for each animal introduced with the proceeds benefiting education and support retrovirus of cats in foster care with the virus.
Last year, 300 cats were entered in the contest in 12 states. There was even an entry from Canada.
